The Bernedoodle Breed

The Beredoodle is a hybrid.  It is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and the Standard Poodle.  The different crosses are described below.

The Bernedoodle is a fun, playful, goofy, and extremely sociable dog.  They are a good fit for just about anybody looking for a beautiful, well-balanced, and good natured pet.  Most have a laid-back temperament, a moderate energy level, and are known as being very intelligent.  They are not considered to be high strung or have an overabundance of energy.  They love to play, swim, run, and fetch, but are also a great companion when it comes time to rest easy.  They are great with children and seem to understand that they need to be gentle around them.  They are low to non-shedding (due to the poodle) and can have a coat that is straight, wavy, or curly, however, most are wavy.  They come in different colors ranging from solid black, black and white, black and brown, or tri colored with black, white and brown.    Generally, a Bernedoodle is 50 pounds or greater, around 21” and up, with an average life expectancy of around 12 – 15 years.

Appearance and temperament

Like most other hybrid or 'designer' dogs, Bernedoodles do not have consistent traits. While many Bernedoodles display desired traits, their appearance and behavioral characteristics remain, from an overall breed standpoint, unpredictable. As such, Bernedoodles' hair can be anywhere from wiry to soft, and may be wavy or curly. Many Bernedoodles do shed, although the coat usually sheds less than that of a Bernese Mountain Dog. While Bernedoodles vary greatly in size, they are almost universally black or predominately so, often with some brown or white, similar to the markings of the Bernese Mountain Dog. Like Poodles, Bernedoodles may be energetic, intelligent and trainable; and like Bernese Mountain Dogs they may be patient, good with families and fond of cold weather.

Crosses of  Bernedoodles

The F1 is currently the most common cross, which is the poodle crossed with the bernese mountain dog. They are 50% poodle and 50% bernese mountain dog. This is a first generation hybrid and has what is known as the "hybrid vigor".  When you cross two different breeds, they tend to have better health because of the variation in lines/breeds that are prone to different genetic diseases.

The F1B is an F1 Bernedoodle crossed with a poodle.  This will produce puppies that are 25% bernese mountain dog and 75% poodle.  They will tend to have a curlier coat and be non shedding.  They will be the best generation for people that suffer with allergies or would like a dog that is non shedding.

The F2 Bernedoodle is an F1 bred to an F1, or an F1B bred to an F1, or an F1B bred to an F1B.

The Labradoodle Breed

The Labradoodle is a hybrid.  It is a cross between a Labradore Retriever and the Standard Poodle.

Physical Characteristics

Much like the Poodle, there are three main sizes for the Labradoodle: standard, medium and miniature. Due to its hybrid nature, however, the physical characteristics of a Labradoodle may vary. For instance, a Labradoodle will have different coat types, from wiry, wooly, wavy, curly, or fleece-like. The color of the coat also varies, including cream, gold, red, black, chocolate, brindle and multi-patterned. Contrary to belief, some Labradoodles do shed, though far less and with less odor than a Labrador Retriever. Though there is no completely hypoallergenic dog, Labradoodles may be a good fit for those with allergies.

Personality and Temperament

The Labradoodle typically acquires the friendliness and well-tempered nature of their parent breeds. Likewise, they are considered very intelligent and highly trainable. Like Labs, they are amazing family dogs and are both good with children and loyal. Like Poodles, they are very smart and can be protective of their people. They're fun-loving, affectionate, athletic, graceful and highly active dogs. They generally make good watchdogs and therapy dogs and get along well with other animals. Unsurprisingly, considering their mix, Labradoodles love the water and can be exceptional swimmers. They can be cautious or shy with strangers and may also be prone to restlessness or loneliness if left along for too long.
